Black River Center for Learning (“BRCL”) located in the Carlsbad community offers children as well as adults just such vital life experiences. Each camp year, we host approximately 600 children and 1,300 adults. In addition to our conference center and worship areas, we offer archery with 3-D targets, basketball, swimming (2 pools), volleyball, canoeing, covered picnicking sites and fishing,. Further, BRCL is located close to the Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe National Park.
The overall attitude of both children and adults at the end of each camp/retreat is so positive that it underscores what we are trying to do at Black River. Our Mission is to be an intentionally accessible and hospitable place for all people where we promote and/or generate educational development, community interaction and positive experiences among our patrons. For those looking to deepen their relationship with the Sacred, we provide a place to renew their spirit. We want our guests to feel refreshed and empowered when they leave Black River.
TAKE IT OUTSIDE…The average child only spends four minutes a day playing outside…One week at summer camp offers children 10,080 minutes to play outside and enjoy nature!
BRCL offers dorm style lodging with each dorm room sleeping 9 people. Each room has a private bathroom with shower. There are 2 dormitory buildings, each having kitchenettes and living centers for large gatherings (common areas). Both dorms are handicap accessible. There is a small chapel on property for intimate worship or weddings along with an outdoor worship area. Recent upgrades/renovations include the completion of “Jacob Hall” conference center and a new boathouse with covered picnic area. Currently, BRCL has 5 canoes, 2 kayaks, and one paddle boat.(life jackets in various sizes are available).
The camp also offers groups the option of prepared meals. BRCL’s menus have been upgraded for quality and nutrition offering a well balanced diet. We will also cater to special dietary needs with advance notice. Here are a few of our sample menu's.
A Camp Store is available for incidentals and/or BRCL gear; check with management for hours of operation.
BRCL has RV sites available for short term and/or long term lease. Please check with management for availability.
For Group reservations, single day use, weddings, or RV site rentals please contact our camp office. Fees are based upon each group or individual specific needs/requests.
